Chicago pest control

We are Illinois's top experts in wildlife and raccoon control. We are not a typical Chicago raccoon control or pest control company. We don't treat wild animals like insects, because they are not! You can't just use poison to get rid of them. You also can't just set a few traps on the ground and call it good. Each situation is unique. And remember, if you have raccoons living in your house, it is almost certainly a female with a litter of young inside. These juveniles must be removed by hand, or they will starve to death and die. And after they are gone, the entry holes into the house must be sealed with professional repairs. Unlike most Chicago pest control, we focus on complete and permanent solutions, by following these steps:

  • Inspect the entire house, ground to roof, and the attic
  • Seal shut all entry areas with professional grade steel
  • If in attic, we remove the baby raccoons by hand
  • Technical and human raccoon trapping appropriate to situation
  • When necessary, we clean raccoon droppings and replace insulation

Chicago Raccoon Control Tip: What Are The Risks Of Touching Or Breathing Raccoon Feces?
The droppings that are produced by raccoons are often similar in appearance and size to those produced by small and medium sized dogs, but this will often hold a threat that is underestimated by many people. Raccoons are wild animals and will often carry a range of different diseases and parasites, and by handling or cleaning their droppings carelessly, it can lead to people contracting a range of diseases. These can prove to be very serious in some cases, so it is worth knowing the risks and taking the appropriate precautions to protect yourself if you are cleaning up raccoon droppings.

The Diseases That May Be Present In Raccoon Feces
There are several different types of conditions that can be carried in the feces, and here are a few of the most common that may be present:

Raccoon Roundworm
This can be caught by people who are dealing with the raccoon feces, and will generally require direct contact with the individual to be transmitted, although as the eggs are quite light, they can also become airborne and be inhaled. The serious aspect to this disease is that if transmitted to people, can migrate to the brain and cause neurological damage and also have an impact on people's sight.

Leptospirosis
This is usually transmitted through the feces and urine or raccoons that is being dealt with while it is fresh, as the bacteria usually dies after the feces is no longer moist. However, when it is contracted by people it can cause some serious consequences, with symptoms starting by showing fever or myalgia, but in severe cases can progress to include inflammation and encephalitis in the brain, kidney failure and liver damage. Where caught early, it can be treated with antibiotics.

Giardia
Although not as serious as some of the other conditions that can be transmitted by raccoons, giardia is certainly painful and problematic for many people who catch the parasite. Once infected, people can have serious bouts of nausea and vomiting, along with the accompanying symptoms that go with this. While most people will only have mild to medium issues with the condition, it can prove to be a more serious threat for those who are suffering with a diminished immune system.

Salmonella
Another bacteria that can be present in raccoon droppings and urine, salmonella is one of the most common bacteria responsible for food poisoning, and can have similar symptoms if caught from raccoon feces. The most common symptoms can include bouts of diarrhea, vomiting and upset stomachs, and in most cases will not cause a particular threat beyond a period of discomfort. However, as with giardia for those who have a compromised immune system the disease can be a lot more dangerous, and can have more serious health implications.

Precautions To Take Before Dealing With Raccoon Feces
Because of the diseases that can be contracted by those who do come into contact with raccoon feces, it is important to take appropriate precautions before moving into any areas where a raccoon may be present, or where you are planning to clean a raccoon latrine. The first thing is to protect yourself from direct contact with the droppings, and for this wearing thick gloves and long sleeved clothing should be a sufficient precaution. However, when it comes to protecting yourself from inhaling spores from the feces, it is important to wear a breathing mask that will filter out any of these spores, while goggles over your eyes can also help to protect from the potential airborne threat.
